Grimes Mill
Charles and Gloria welcomed me to their incredible historical property in 2025. Over the course of six weeks I repaired 220 feet of dry stone wall.
It’s hard not to fall in love with Grimes Mill at first sight. The limestone house showcases some of the best cut stone in Central Kentucky. It was built by old man Grimes and the stone mason he hired, Peter Paul. Paul quarried the stone here on the estate. It’s heavy limestone and real pretty.
The home is often covered in fog in the mornings. I would wake up and say hello to the house and then walk to my part of the wall with Cozy. I started in August, and the days were hot and heavy. But I didn’t mind with such lovely stone company.
Grimes Mill will always have a special place in my heart because it taught me how to blend my sections in with the rest of the wall. You don’t want your repaired section to stick out like a sore thumb. You want to do stone work that looks like it was always there.
